5 issues it is best to know this weekend
As the Ida cleanup continues, Larry is expected to get significantly stronger
Flooded cars and scattered debris were hauled away on Friday as cleanup operations continue this weekend after Hurricane Ida struck the south and then shocked the northeast, killing over 60 people in eight states in the past week. However, the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season shows no signs of slowing. Hurricane Larry is expected to intensify over the next day or two and remain at great hurricane strength through early next week, the National Hurricane Center said early Saturday morning. Significant swells are likely to hit the eastern United States coast after the holiday weekend, the Hurricane Center added.
Another European country is tightening travel restrictions for US travelers
The Netherlands, a member state of the European Union, placed the USA in its “very high risk” category on Saturday, which bans entry for unvaccinated travelers from the USA and prescribes tests and a quarantine period for the vaccinated. That means vaccinated US travelers will have to be quarantined for 10 days from Saturday, but can shorten the isolation time if they test negative for coronavirus on the fifth day. According to the website of the Dutch government, children under the age of 12 are exempt. The changes follow the European Union’s decision to remove the US from its safe travel list, signaling to members that they should no longer relax non-essential travel restrictions for people from the US if the COVID-19 cases gain weight. Bulgaria announced that it would move the US to its “red zone” and ban travel from the US, and Italy added testing and self-isolation requirements for US travelers.
College football is back for most of the great programs
Week 1 of college football season is here, with many of the main programs on Saturday. Most notable on a weekend that hosts five top 25 matches is number 2 Clemson vs. Earlier in the day, defending champion No. 1 Alabama faces a tough test when they play the Chick-fil-A-Kickoff game ( 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC) in Atlanta against Miami # 16. Because the NFL doesn’t start its season until next weekend, the first week of college football season is often extended with key games that also include Sunday. This year No. 9 Notre Dame ended its season on Sunday night with a trip to Tallahassee to play Florida State (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC). Although the first week schedule generally marks the start of the college football season, a handful of programs kicked off with their “Week 0” matches early on August 28th.
Djokovic continues his chase with the game in the third round at the US Open
The men’s number 1, Novak Djokovic from Serbia, continues his hunt for the Grand Slam calendar when he meets the Japanese Kei Nishikori in the third round at the US Open in New York on Saturday. Djokovic has five wins in the first men’s singles Grand Slam in the calendar year since Rod Laver accomplished the feat in 1969 52 years ago. A win at the US Open would also give Djokovic a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title. He is currently tied with rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Also on Saturday, the women’s No. 1 and 2021 Wimbledon winner, Ash Barty of Australia, will try to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time when she plays against Shelby Rogers. In an important development, Naomi Osaka lost her game in the third round on Friday evening against the unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez. She later cried trying to articulate how she processed winning and losing and ended her press conference by saying she thought she would take a break from gambling for “a while”.
When shouldn’t you take to the streets this weekend?
Are you going on a Labor Day weekend trip? You may be faced with long lines of traffic. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises unvaccinated Americans to stay home for this Labor Day weekend, traffic in certain corridors is expected to increase between Sept. 2-7 as travelers use the three-day weekend, according to the transport analysis company INRIX. For the long weekend, including Monday, according to INRIX, the best time to drive is early in the morning and the worst time in the afternoon.
