England v India: Moeen Ali joins the squad for the second check at Lord’s
Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen Ali has been added to the English squad for the second Test against India.
Moeen, 34, last played test cricket in the second game of the series against India in Chennai in February.
That was his first test since Ashes kicked off in Edgbaston in 2019.
The other all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes are currently unavailable for England who have been outplayed for a long time as they pulled the start of the series last week at the Trient Bridge.
Moeen has represented England in limited edition cricket this summer while captaining Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred and helped them to the top of the men’s table.
“He was called up for his bat and ball skills,” said England captain Joe Root.
“He’s in serious shape right now, albeit short, but we all know what he’s capable of in the testing arena.
“He’s a great contender for the next Test. We haven’t been down so we’ll have to look at the conditions and weigh things up, but he’s in a great position to possibly play.”
Meanwhile, Stuart Broad will have a scan on Wednesday after pinching his right calf while warming up at Lord’s.
The injury meant he couldn’t train with England on Tuesday and the scan will determine how serious it is.
England squad: Joe Root (Capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Dom Bess, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Haseeb Hameed, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Craig Overton , Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Dom Sibley, Mark Wood.
