Gleision: “Responsible of surviving the mine catastrophe with me eternally”

It’s been a decade since four miners were killed when water fell into a drifting mine in south Wales.

Charles Breslin, 62, David Powell, 50, Phillip Hill, 44, and Garry Jenkins, 39, died on September 15, 2011 in the Gleision colliery near Cilybebyll, Neath Port Talbot.

Co-miners Jake Wyatt, 68, and Nigel Evans, 49, were two of only three who escaped, and the weight of events and the “guilt of the survivors” still affect them.

“I think I’ll always have that guilt until I die,” Jake said.
