Provide bottlenecks within the New River Valley

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – On Friday, pediatricians and general practitioners say they have a slight staff shortage.

Lee Cox, practice manager at New River Valley Pediatrics, said patients are coming left and right this time of year. The pandemic is not helping either.

“I think we’re a little tired, and I think a lot has changed with COVID,” said Cox.

Cox said nationwide health care providers have vacancies and the staff can sometimes be overwhelmed.

There are several open positions at New River Valley Pediatrics for a Certified Nursing Assistant position.

“This time of year is always a challenge, because there is a lot of training and a lot of things that you don’t expect at the beginning of the day. So you have to be prepared for changes in the schedule, ”explains Cox.

Cox doesn’t like to use the word “understaffed” because she thinks her team is doing a great job meeting the demand for back to school vaccinations, PCR COVID-19 tests, vaccinations and more.

Christopher Finley, marketing director for LewisGale’s regional health system, said they are working to address the shortage.

“LewisGale’s regional health system is working to address a tight labor market coinciding with a shortage of nurses exacerbated by the pandemic. As part of the HCA Virginia Health System, our facilities work to retain our existing colleagues, attract new nurses, and encourage and support those considering careers in nursing through educational programs. “

However, this is not the case with all healthcare providers. Some say times are tough, but others are fine as they work with full staff.

Blacksburg Pediatrics said they were fine but finding staff were difficult during the height of the pandemic.

“It is extremely difficult for managers to find staff, whether in a hospital or in a small practice. There have been many concerns about being around and being exposed to sick people, ”said Michelle Cramer, CCMA & Practice Manager at Blacksburg Pediatrics.

Many health systems seek to nurture health care jobs through partnerships with colleges and universities.
