NEW YORK – Bruce Springsteen performed in the World Trade Center Memorial Plaza during a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
The audience of dignitaries and family members of people killed in the 2001 attacks applauded after Springsteen performed his song “I’ll See You In My Dreams,” while accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica.
The relatives of the victims then read the names of the fallen again, a tradition since the first anniversary of the attacks that razed the twin towers of the trading center to the ground.

NEW YORK – The commemoration of 9/11 at Ground Zero began with a ringing bell and a minute’s silence, exactly 20 years after the deadliest terrorist attack on US soil began.
President Joe Biden, former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, members of Congress, and other dignitaries joined a crowd of victims’ families on Saturday at Memorial Square in New York on September 11th. The memorial stands where the twin towers of the World Trade Center were rammed and felled by hijacked planes.
Commemorations are also planned at the other two locations where the 9/11 conspirators crashed their hijacked jets: the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Biden is due to pay respect in all three locations, and former President George W. Bush is due to speak at the ceremony in Pennsylvania.
KABUL, Afghanistan – The Taliban flag flies over the Afghan Presidential Palace on the same day the US and the world mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The anniversary Saturday comes just weeks after the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the return of the Taliban to power, the group that protected the militant Muslim group founded by Osama bin Laden that carried out the attacks.
The Taliban flag was hoisted on Friday and was seen over the presidential palace in Kabul on Saturday.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama praised the heroes of 9/11 – and the years after – in a message marking the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
“One thing that became clear on September 11, 2001 – and has been clear since then – is that America has always been the home of heroes who are at risk to do the right thing,” said Obama, who was US from 2009-2009 -President was in 2017.
He said the lasting image for him and his wife Michelle that day was not the rubble and destruction, but the people. He highlighted firefighters running up the stairs while others ran down, passengers who stormed the cockpit of their plane, and volunteers advancing across the country in the days that followed.
“Over the past 20 years we’ve seen the same courage and selflessness over and over again,” Obama said.
“We saw it a decade ago when justice was done to Osama bin Laden by our military after years of perseverance. And we see it today – with the doctors and nurses who are bone-tired and do everything to save lives; the soldiers, some of whom were born less than 20 years ago, who risk themselves to save Americans and help refugees live better lives; the first responders fight against crackling fires and rising water to bring families to safety. “
LONDON – Queen Elizabeth II celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by expressing her condolences to the victims, survivors and families affected by the atrocities.
In a message to US President Joe Biden, the British monarch recalled the “terrible attacks” on New York and Washington, DC
“My thoughts and prayers – and those of my family and the nation as a whole – stay with the victims, survivors and affected families, as well as first responders and rescue workers called to serve,” she said.
“I have fond memories of my visit to the World Trade Center site in 2010. It reminds me that when we honor people from many nations, faiths, and backgrounds who have lost their lives, we also recognize the resilience and determination of the communities that have come together to rebuild. “
Prime Minister Boris Johnson also recalled the attacks and issued a statement ahead of the anniversary saying that the terrorists had failed to “shake our belief in freedom and democracy”.
“They failed to drive our nations apart or make us give up our values or live in constant fear.”
SEOUL, South Korea – South Korean President Moon Jae-in met US President Joe Biden and the American people on the occasion of the 20th US Counter Terrorism Effort.
Moon said in a message posted on Twitter and Facebook on Saturday that “the shock of that day still lingers as deep wounds in the hearts of so many” and that “no violence can win over peace and inclusivity”.
He said South Korea is “America’s strong ally who will continue to actively join your and the international community’s efforts to combat terrorism.”

President Joe Biden is scheduled to travel to all three locations in the 2001 attacks.
Former President George W. Bush is expected to speak at the Pennsylvania Memorial. Further celebrations are planned across the country.
